Two things worth knowing before you plan a workflow.

Clip resolution follows the source. A clip taken from a 720p stream is 720p, not 1080p — Twitch does not upscale. If you stream at 720p60 for bandwidth reasons, your clips are 1280×720, and cropping to vertical from that leaves you with roughly a 405-pixel-wide column before scaling. Streaming at 1080p gives your clips materially more room to survive a crop.

Why Letterboxing Kills a Clip

The obvious conversion — drop the 16:9 clip into a 9:16 canvas, centre it, fill the rest with black — is the one to avoid.

Run the arithmetic. A 1920×1080 clip scaled to fit the 1080-pixel width of a vertical frame becomes 1080×608. The frame is 1920 tall. Your content occupies 608 of 1920 pixels, about 32% of the screen, with two thirds of the viewport as dead black space.

That costs you in three ways at once. Faces and on-screen text render at a third of the size viewers expect, so detail that read fine on a monitor becomes unreadable on a phone. The empty space reads instantly as reposted content rather than native, which is exactly the signal short-form algorithms tend to demote. And a smaller visual footprint means less to arrest a scroll in the first half-second, which is the entire game.

The fix is not to make the clip fit the frame. It is to rebuild the frame around what matters in the clip.


The Three Layouts That Work

1. Crop with subject tracking

Take a 9:16 slice out of the 16:9 frame and move that slice to follow whoever is talking.

A static centre crop discards 44% of the frame width and frequently cuts the face-cam off entirely, since face-cams usually sit in a corner. Tracking solves that: the crop window follows the speaker, so a face-cam in the bottom-left stays framed even as the gameplay behind it moves.

Best for: talking segments, reactions, face-cam-dominant moments, IRL streams. Weak for: gameplay where the important action is spread across the full width.

2. Stacked layout

Split the vertical frame horizontally: gameplay in the upper portion, face-cam enlarged below. Both stay visible, and neither is shrunk to a third of the screen.

This is the layout most stream clips on TikTok actually use, and it exists because stream content has two subjects — what is happening in the game, and the streamer's reaction to it — and cropping forces you to abandon one.

Best for: gameplay with reaction, competitive moments, anything where the point is the streamer's response to what happened. Weak for: streams with no face-cam, since you have nothing to fill the lower panel with.

3. Blurred-background fill

Centre the 16:9 clip, fill the space above and below with a blurred, scaled-up copy of the same footage.

This is letterboxing with better manners. The content is still 32% of the frame, but the dead space is no longer black, so the clip does not read as obviously reposted. It is a fallback, not a technique — reach for it when tracking and stacking both fail.

Best for: full-width gameplay with no face-cam, wide-shot IRL content. Weak for: anything with small on-screen detail, which stays small.

Reframing correctly and then putting your best detail where the platform covers it is a common own goal.

Ultrawide and Non-Standard Sources

Streamers on 21:9 ultrawide monitors have a harder version of this problem, and it starts before the clip does.

Twitch encodes at 16:9. A 21:9 source pushed into a 16:9 stream either gets letterboxed at broadcast — in which case your clips contain black bars baked into the video — or gets cropped by your streaming software. Either way, the clip you download inherits whatever compromise was made when you went live.

If your clips already contain baked-in bars, crop them out before reframing. Converting a letterboxed 16:9 clip to 9:16 without removing the existing bars produces a clip with black space on all four sides, which is the worst possible result.

The Conversion Workflow
