Why cloud clippers have to meter you
Every browser-based clipper runs the same architecture: you upload a file, it lands in a queue, a rented GPU processes it, and you download the result. That GPU time is the vendor's largest variable cost, and it scales directly with how much video you push through.
That single fact explains almost every limit you have run into. Opus Pro sells 300 credits a month at $29 because a credit is roughly a minute of GPU time. Vizard caps you at 600 minutes. Klap meters both uploads and clips, and refuses source files over 45 minutes on its entry plan. None of these are arbitrary product decisions — they are the vendor's compute bill, passed to you.
Move the processing to hardware you already own and the entire cost structure disappears. There is no GPU to rent, so there is nothing to meter, no reason to cap source length, and no queue to sit in. That is the whole argument for on-device clipping, and everything else on this page follows from it.
What on-device actually means here
"Local" is a word several tools now use loosely, so it is worth being precise about what happens when you clip a video with Ascynd.
The transcription, the moment detection, the engagement scoring, the reframing, the caption rendering and the export all execute in a native process on your machine. The source video is read from the path you selected and the finished clips are written to the folder you chose. At no point is the file, or any part of it, transmitted anywhere.
The app does talk to the network for the things you would expect — checking your licence, fetching updates, and sending anonymous crash diagnostics. None of those carry video data, and the clipping pipeline itself does not require the network at all. Turn the connection off and clipping keeps working, which is the subject of the offline editing page.
Written in Rust, for a reason
Running a full clipping pipeline on a creator's laptop is a harder engineering problem than running it on a server you control. You cannot assume a specific GPU, a fixed amount of memory, or a machine that is doing nothing else. The engine has to be fast enough to be worth it and light enough not to make the machine unusable while it works.
That is why the core is native Rust rather than a packaged web app. It gives predictable memory behaviour, direct access to hardware video encode and decode, and no browser runtime sitting between the code and the silicon. It is also why the same engine ships on both Mac and Windows, where most local-first clipping tools are macOS-only — and in several cases Apple Silicon only.

- What does on-device video processing mean?
- It means the AI work happens on your own computer instead of on a remote server. Ascynd transcribes, detects moments, reframes, captions and exports using your machine's CPU and GPU. The source video is read from your disk and the finished clips are written back to it, so the file is never transmitted anywhere.
- Does Ascynd need an internet connection to clip a video?
- No. The clipping pipeline runs entirely offline. The app connects for licence checks and updates, but you can clip, caption, reframe and export with the connection switched off.
- What hardware do I need for on-device clipping?
- Any reasonably modern Mac, Windows or Linux machine. Processing speed scales with your CPU and GPU, so a faster machine finishes sooner — but unlike a cloud queue, the time is yours and is not shared with other users or throttled by your plan tier.
- Is on-device processing more private than cloud clipping?
- Structurally, yes. Cloud clippers require you to transfer your unreleased footage to third-party infrastructure, where it is stored at least long enough to process and usually longer. With on-device processing there is no transfer and no third-party copy, which matters most for client work, unreleased content, and anything under a confidentiality agreement.
- Which platforms does on-device clipping support?
- Mac and Windows are the officially supported and release-tested builds. Ascynd also builds and runs on Linux, though we do not test every release there yet. That is still broader than most local-first clipping tools, which are macOS-only and in several cases Apple Silicon only — so Windows users are usually pushed back to browser-based tools.
